Tomb of Muyi

The Tomb of Muyi is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Muyi, courtesy name Ziyu, was a figure from the Spring and Autumn period, the 17th-generation descendant of Yi Yin of the Shang dynasty, and the half-brother of Duke Xiang of Song. He was a renowned statesman and military strategist. When Duke Xiang ascended the throne, Muyi served as his prime minister. His exceptional strategic thinking can be glimpsed in the “Debate on the Battle” during the great battle between the states of Song and Chu at the Hong River. Out of reverence for the ancient sage Yi Yin, Muyi was buried on Weishan Island.

The Tomb of Muyi is located on the eastern peak of the island, about 1 kilometer from the Tomb of Wei Zi. In front of the tomb stands a stone stele erected in the fifth year of the Xining era of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty (1072 AD) by Fu Yaoyu, prefect of Xuzhou. The front of the stele bears an intaglio seal script inscription: “Tomb Stele of the Noble Lord Muyi of the Song.” The stele is rectangular with rounded corners, measuring 2.8 meters in height, 0.9 meters in width, and 0.4 meters in thickness. This tomb is a key cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Weishan Island Town: Weishan Island boasts vast waters and abundant resources, long famed for its reputation of “producing a bushel of gold at sunrise.” There are as many as 72 species of fish across 50 genera and 50 families in ten orders, including prominent varieties such as carp, crucian carp, perch, silver carp, and red and white eels. Common shellfish include the Chinese pond snail and the Chinese apple snail, with the meat of the latter being exported to Japan and many other countries and regions around the world. The folded crown mussel, known for its use as a mother shell in pearl cultivation, is also quite famous. The main types of shrimp found here include the green shrimp, white rice shrimp, Chinese grass shrimp (Neocaridina denticulata sinensis), and the Chinese flowerback shrimp (Caridina gracilirostris).
