Weishan Information Port News, Weishan Forum initiated a rock climbing activity for Weishan sports enthusiasts at Jinniu Mountain on June 6, calling on more rock climbing enthusiasts to join in and challenge themselves.

Rock climbing refers to ascending a rock face without aids, known in English as "FreeClimbing." Here it means relying solely on the climber’s own strength to complete the climb. The sport requires people to perform a series of thrilling movements—such as turning, pull-ups, shifting, and even jumping—on rock faces of various heights and angles. Combining fitness, entertainment, and competition, it is an exhilarating yet graceful extreme sport, referred to by climbers worldwide as the “ballet on the cliffs.”

Rock climbing is an emerging extreme sport derived from mountaineering. It originated in the Soviet Union in the 1950s when the military began using individual climbing activities as part of their training. By the 1970s, rock climbing had become a competitive sport in Europe.

In the early 1980s, rock climbing was introduced to China from North America, initially mainly as part of the training program of the China Mountaineering Association. It gradually gained popularity among the public. University students across the country began forming mountaineering and rock climbing clubs, and soon after, young outdoor enthusiasts spontaneously organized civilian outdoor clubs. Every weekend or holiday, they would pack their backpacks and head into the mountains to climb natural rock faces.

Most mountain enthusiasts have probably seen the movie *Vertical Limit*. Beyond the visual thrill brought by high-tech production, do the mysterious snow-capped mountains, treacherous rock faces, and those romantic, heroic climbers in the film stir a bit of restlessness in you, the restless soul?

The story of *Vertical Limit* takes place on K2 (Mount Qogir), the world’s second-highest peak. The plot is filled with the conflict between good and evil, and between the spirit of extreme adventure and commercialized mountaineering. Dramatic conflict is essential to movies, so everything in the film becomes somewhat exaggerated. But in reality, the spirit of extremity portrayed in the film is not so far from us.

The fundamental difference between extreme sports and traditional sports lies in this: extreme sports pursue the process and the experience, while sports focus on results and achievements. In this sense, everyone can benefit greatly from extreme sports. Perhaps on the rock face, you may only climb ten meters high, but what you gain from it may be no less than what the protagonist in *Vertical Limit* experiences.

Rock climbing is derived from mountaineering. It requires participants to have a brave, tenacious, and indomitable spirit, as well as to test their physical fitness and technique: flexibility, coordination, strength, and skill are all essential. Rock climbers search for indentations and holds on the rock face to complete maneuvers such as shifting, jumping, pull-ups, and turns, almost like creating a flowing painting. Hence, rock climbing is also called the “ballet on the cliffs.”

Rock climbing is not about conquest, because the mountains and rock faces are your companions—that is the true joy of rock climbing. Nor is it an aristocratic sport: although high-quality specialized ropes are needed for safety, brand-name climbing shoes and professional sportswear are not necessary. A pair of well-fitting ordinary sneakers and durable clothing are sufficient. Grand mountains are wonderful, but indoor climbing walls or small hills can also let you feel the charm of rock climbing. On the rock face, there are no shortcuts—only solid, step-by-step progress using both hands and feet.

Life is constantly changing. The increase in holidays and growing attention to physical health seem to remind people of one thing: it's time to spend a bit more time and money to enjoy life. Nowadays, more people are using weekends to travel. After visiting nearby urban attractions, they seek new experiences. As a result, a popular fitness activity abroad has been introduced to China: outdoor sports that integrate camping, rock climbing, and rappelling. Because this sport is both challenging and satisfies people’s curiosity, it quickly became popular among young people and turned into a fashion trend.

Three or five friends get together, carry a main rope and a few pitons, bring tents and sleeping bags, and hit rugged mountain paths in search of a steep cliff. When tired, they sit on the ground; when thirsty, they drink cool stream water; when hungry, they eat the food they’ve brought along. The journey feels fun and adventurous.

Once a suitable cliff is found, they set up “protection” and start rock climbing. You can experience using your limbs to defy gravity. Climbing up and sliding down, then finding new holds, repeating the process over and over. When you keep overcoming the urge to give up and finally stand triumphantly at the top, you’ll realize just how amazing you are.

When the sun sets, everyone packs up the climbing gear, finds a flat spot, sets up tents, unfolds sleeping bags, and begins building a temporary home. Though small, lacking soft beds or urban comfort, it still shelters you from wind and rain. Preparing your own dinner, sitting around a campfire gazing at the starry sky, listening to the wondrous sounds of nature—you’ll feel all worldly concerns fade away and worries become unimportant. Perhaps, this is the allure of outdoor sports.

Engaging in outdoor sports allows people to relieve stress in unique ways. Between the comfort of urban life and the hardships of outdoor living, we come to understand happiness and cherish life. Rock climbing also hones our perseverance, builds courage and confidence in facing challenges, and empowers us to challenge and surpass ourselves. After the trials of outdoor sports, we maintain a positive mindset and greet life in a brand-new way.
