Ehu Academy

Ehu Academy is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Ehu Academy is located at the foot of Ehu Mountain in Yanshan County, Shangrao, and is one of the four great academies of ancient Jiangxi, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. The academy was home to many scholars and once served as a renowned cultural center. In particular, the Meeting at Ehu between the Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty and Lu Jiuyuan, among others, became a profoundly influential event in the history of Confucianism in China. In the second year of the Chunxi era of the Southern Song Dynasty, famous Neo-Confucian scholars of the time such as Zhu Xi, Lu Jiuling, Lu Jiuyuan, and Lü Zuqian gathered here to debate the philosophy of "human nature and principle."

Ehu Academy was home to many scholars and once served as a renowned cultural center. In particular, the Meeting at Ehu between the Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty and Lu Jiuyuan, among others, became a profoundly influential event in the history of Confucianism in China. In the second year of the Chunxi era of the Southern Song Dynasty, famous Neo-Confucian scholars of the time such as Zhu Xi, Lu Jiuling, Lu Jiuyuan, and Lü Zuqian gathered here to debate the philosophy of "human nature and principle." Although the debate ended without mutual agreement, the intellectual sparks it generated illuminated the future development of Neo-Confucianism. To commemorate the "Meeting at Ehu," the Four Sages Shrine was built behind the academy. Surrounded by mountains and streams, the academy enjoys an elegant environment, and its well-arranged architecture makes it a truly ideal place for study.
