Huangbi She Ethnic Township

Huangbi She Ethnic Township is located on the border between Jiangxi and Fujian provinces, at the northern foot of the Wuyi Mountains. It serves as the southern gateway to Yanshan County, situated 87 kilometers from the county seat and 40 kilometers from the Shangfen Line of the national defense highway. The township covers a total area of 81 square kilometers, comprising 4 administrative villages and 28 villager groups, with a total population of 3,728, including 1,300 people of She ethnicity, and a forested area of 100,000 mu, along with 179 hectares of arable land. Centered around the goal of building

a "harmonious, prosperous, and beautiful" new She ethnic township, the local officials and residents have united sincerely and worked hard, achieving significant progress in the social and economic development of the township. In 2007, the township achieved a gross domestic product of 28.7 million yuan, fiscal revenue of 1.36 million yuan, and a per capita income of 3,200 yuan.

In recent years, the township has fully embraced the spirit of "preferring hard work over suffering, refusing to yield to poverty, never losing ambition despite hardship, and daring to be the first." Externally, it has made full and flexible use of ethnic policies, striving in every way to raise funds to complete infrastructure projects such as rural power grid renovation, transportation, and water conservancy, further improving functionality. Internally, based on the actual conditions of the She ethnic township, it has transformed resource advantages into economic strengths, showing a positive development trend. Four power stations have been built: Jinlong Hydropower, Dalongkeng, Xiaolangkeng, and Xindayan, with a total installed capacity of 2,890 kilowatts, and the construction of Guankou Power Station is underway. Additionally, four bamboo product enterprises, led by "Feiyu," have been introduced.

The natural resources are extremely abundant. Huangbi She Ethnic Township boasts rich forest resources, with a total forested area of 100,000 mu, including 37,000 mu of bamboo forests and over 3 million standing bamboo poles, earning it the reputation of "Huangtian's Gifted Pillars Five Thousand Zhang High, Bihai's Bamboo Waves Tens of Thousands of Layers Deep," from which Huangbi derives its name. The township still preserves many pristine forests, where one can find large areas of precious tree species such as yew, fir, and ancient ginkgo, as well as rare animals like wild boar bears, foxes, capped langurs, and giant salamanders. In 2002, the Wuyi Mountain Nature Reserve established a protection station in Huangbi. Moreover, the area also has abundant water resources and mineral resources such as lead, zinc, and fluorite.

The local customs and folk culture are uniquely charming. The She people have lived in Huangbi for over 500 years. Over time, She and Han people have lived together, intermingling, learning from each other, and progressing together, forming unique folk customs and a strong atmosphere of ethnic unity. The She people have their own language, traditional clothing, and customs, such as using flower sedan chairs for weddings, the "going-out" ritual on New Year’s Day, the temple fair on August 24, and beautiful She ethnic dances. Historic She-style buildings like the Hua Family Ancestral Hall, Cichen Memorial Archway, Wanggong Temple, and the Lei Family Courtyard also showcase distinctive characteristics. Due to unique living customs and the special geographical location, Huangbi is also famous for naturally produced green foods that are highly favored, such as tofu, fish from Xiaogang, wild bee honey, white yams, and bitter-sweet tea.

The natural landscapes are magical and stunning. Upon entering Huangbi, what greets your eyes is a vast expanse of bamboo forests stretching for dozens of miles, their lush green hues refreshing and invigorating. Scattered waterfalls come in various forms: some plunge straight down “three thousand feet,” others flow gently along natural slopes, while some resemble the legendary “Water Curtain Cave.” As you stroll through the bamboo forests or alongside the waterfalls, you might encounter She women busy at work. If you’re willing to ask, they will eagerly share with you the ancient and magical legends of the Three Aunts’ Stones, the origins of Tiger Village, and the stories of the Immortal Bridge… You may be half-skeptical, but if you visit the Immortal Cave, you’ll surely believe it’s a remarkable coincidence between the She people and nature. When you emerge from the Immortal Cave, you’ll find yourself in a green basin surrounded by towering mountains. Don’t assume these are the highest peaks—here lies the East China Region’s second-highest peak, “Dushuzhen,” with an elevation of 2,157 meters. It’s recommended you climb it to experience its majesty and beauty… Visiting Huangbi, you’ll find its magical and stunning natural environment truly captivating.
