Yan River Hekou Ancient Town

Hekou Ancient Town was once one of the four most famous towns in Jiangxi Province during history. During the Northern Song Dynasty, it was called "Shawan Market." In the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, the town had a developed handicraft industry and waterways that led directly to Poyang Lake. By the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, Hekou reached its heyday, becoming a hub for goods from Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guangdong, Hubei, and Jiangsu, which were distributed here and then sold across the country, turning it into a bustling "thoroughfare of eight provinces."

Hekou Town is under the jurisdiction of Yanshan County, Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province. It was historically known as Shawan Market. Due to its location at the confluence of the Xin River and the Yan River, it was named Hekou. During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, the town had a developed handicraft industry and waterways that led directly to Poyang Lake. The expansion of commodity exchange promoted the prosperity of "Shawan Market." By the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, Hekou reached its heyday, becoming a hub for goods from Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guangdong, Hubei, and Jiangsu, which were distributed here and then sold across the country, turning it into a bustling "thoroughfare of eight provinces" and one of the ancient Four Famous Towns of Jiangxi.

Transportation

Hekou Town is the seat of Yanshan County in Shangrao City. You can take an intercounty bus from "Shangrao–Yanshan" to get there directly. Buses depart from Daihu Bus Station (via the highway, 30 minutes, 15 RMB fare) and Sanjiang Bus Station (via the provincial road, 1 hour, 11.5 RMB fare).
