The Evil Dragon Cave is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

From 2002 to 2009, the Evil Dragon Cave was promoted as the Righteous Dragon Cave. It gets its name from a beautiful legend about the deity Xu Zhenjun who heroically slew the evil dragon to uphold justice. Stretching over 8 li (approximately 4 kilometers), the cave features unique water scenery. The “Cave Waterfall” is one of the wonders of the world — clear spring water rushes down from the steep cliffs inside the cave and plunges straight into a jade-green pool. The impact stirs up foam on the water surface, creating turbulent currents that swirl around in the pool. During the rainy season in spring and summer, the rushing waters resemble a galaxy pouring down, creating a spectacular sight.

The Righteous Dragon Cave was the new name given to the Evil Dragon Cave between 2002 and 2009 by “merchants from Zhuhai.” This name has since been abolished, and the site has reverted to its original name, the Evil Dragon Cave. It is located in Qingxi, Futian Town, Shangli County, Pingxiang City, Jiangxi Province. This natural karst cave, formed 180 million years ago, stretches over 4,200 meters. Previously known as the Evil Dragon Cave, it features extraordinary rock formations, refreshing breezes, flowing springs, and waterfalls, collectively referred to as the “Four Wonders of the Cave.” There is a waterfall nine meters high and seven meters wide, which geologists and landscape experts have called an unprecedented and unheard-of wonder. In 1982, it was praised by Mr. Chen Yanzhou, an authority on China’s scenic spots and a professor at Tongji University, as the “World’s Number One Cave” and an “Underground Art Gallery.”

The Evil Dragon Cave is located in Qingxi Village, Futian Town, Shangli County, Pingxiang City. It can be directly accessed via National Highway 319 and is 13 kilometers from downtown Pingxiang. It is a natural landscape primarily featuring a karst cave. Originally named the Evil Dragon Cave, it was formed around 180 million years ago. Legend has it that in ancient times, an evil dragon in Poyang Lake attempted to turn Jiangxi into a vast swamp, causing chaos and harming the people. It was eventually subdued by Xu Zhenjun in a cave at the foot of Yangqi Mountain in Pingxiang, hence the cave’s name. In 2001, it was developed by investors from Zhuhai and renamed the Righteous Dragon Cave.

Stretching 4.2 kilometers in length and winding through the landscape, the cave is accompanied by streams of water that follow its curves. The water brings the cave to life, and in flat areas, the stream flows quietly like a jade ribbon. At fault lines, it cascades into waterfalls, with the roaring sound echoing like spring thunder. From rock crevices, clear springs occasionally emerge, their sounds like bells or zithers. The cave is richly adorned with karst formations and stalactites — some resembling jade carvings, others like embroidery, taking on human or animal shapes, objects or shadows, all remarkably lifelike. The cave contains interconnected chambers, with the largest chamber reaching up to 30 meters in height and capable of holding a thousand people. The stalagmites, stalactites, and stone curtains are delicate, translucent, and glisten in vibrant colors, presenting a variety of forms. The experience combines both static admiration and dynamic observation, offering the joy of imaginative thinking and forming a magnificent sculpture art gallery. It is hailed as the “World’s Number One Cave” and an “Underground Art Gallery.” The Paradise Hall within the cave encompasses the beauty of heaven, earth, and all four seasons. The Cave Waterfall, 18 meters high and 5 to 15 meters wide, is another masterpiece of nature. The Cave Waterfall has a drop of 9 meters and is about 10 meters wide, with thunderous waves and resounding echoes, making it a highlight of the cave. Other attractions inside include Early Spring in the South, Winter Snow on the Great Wall, Eighteen Arhats Ascending the Heavenly Gate, Turtle Climbing to Heaven, Turtle and Tortoise Dancing Together, Seals Playing in Water, Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate, Crane Singing, Upside-down Golden Monkey, Fragrant Fruits, Iceberg and Snow Lotus, Cottage with Spring Willows, Child Worshipping Guanyin, Water Palace, Bodhi Tree, Sea-Calming Bell, Thousand Hills of Fields, and Fairy Descending to Earth. Among these, the strange rocks, refreshing breeze, flowing springs, and waterfalls are known as the “Four Wonders of the Cave.” Outside the cave, performances showcasing ethnic minority culture, as well as thrilling acts such as tightrope walking and motorcycle stunts, enrich the visitor experience at the Righteous Dragon Cave.

Futian Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Shangli County. In 1949, it belonged to the Tongmu District. In 1958, the Futian Commune was established. In 1984, it was restructured as a township, and in 1991, it became a town. Located in the southern part of the county, the town government is based in Futian, 29 kilometers from the county seat. It covers an area of 57.1 square kilometers and has a population of 40,000. National Highway 319 passes through the town.
