Ancient Ritual to Worship Heaven & Folk Performances – Miaoli Hakka “Tianchuan Day” Kicks Off on March 1

At 9:00 a.m. on March 1, a traditional Hakka ritual to worship heaven will be performed. This will be followed by lion dance and folk dance performances by students from Jianguo Elementary School and Shitan Elementary School—both Hakka Language Living Schools in Miaoli County. Additionally, Huang Yujuan from Hakka TV’s “Lively Challenge Stage” will sing classic Hakka songs. To support the Council of Hakka Affairs’ low-carbon living concept of “Enjoying Life, Caring for the Earth,” six-star chef Ah Hsia will also demonstrate how to create delicious, guilt-free light meals using leftover ingredients.

 

On the morning of March 2, teams promoting Hakka songs in Miaoli County will take turns showcasing their promotion achievements. The Miaoli County Hakka Performing Arts Promotion Association will perform captivating traditional Hakka music, while the renowned local dance troupe Shanshan Dance Art Workshop will stun the audience with their dance piece “Firecrackers Celebrate a Bumper Harvest.” Hakka pop star Xiao Peiru will also perform beautiful Hakka songs. Furthermore, the event will feature nostalgic DIY activities such as eco-friendly maltose drums and Hakka pressed preserved vegetable crafts to promote the spirit of Hakka culture.

 

Tianchuan Day is one of the important festivals in Hakka culture. Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a huge hole in the sky, which was repaired by Nüwa using multicolored stones to save humanity. To show gratitude, people later designated this day to let the earth rest by pausing their work and making sweet sticky rice balls to pray for good fortune. Over time, it evolved into a joyful celebration. In 2009, the Council of Hakka Affairs designated Tianchuan Day as the “National Hakka Day,” leading to lively celebrations across Hakka communities that attract enthusiastic visitors nationwide.
