The annual national Hakka Tianchuan Day falls on the 20th day of the first lunar month. This year, Miaoli County will hold Tianchuan Day events on the mornings of March 1 and 2 at the Tongluo Hakka Courtyard (Tonghua Leisure Park) in Miaoli County. The program will include traditional Hakka heaven-worshiping rituals, Hakka folk dances, Hakka song performances, as well as performances of traditional Hakka music by local groups and DIY activities with nostalgic toys.

At 9:00 a.m. on March 1, traditional Hakka heaven-worshiping rituals will be performed, followed by displays of Hakka lion dances and folk dances by students from Hakka-language schools in Miaoli County, such as Jianguo Elementary School and Shitan Elementary School. Huang Yujuan from Hakka TV’s “Hot Competition Stage” will also be invited to sing classic Hakka songs. In addition, in response to the Council for Hakka Affairs’ low-carbon living concept of “Eco-friendly, Healthy, and Earth-Loving,” the event will feature six-star chef Chef A-Hua, who will demonstrate how to use leftover ingredients to prepare delicious and healthy light meals.

On the morning of March 2, teams in Miaoli County promoting Hakka folk songs will take turns to showcase the results of their Hakka song promotion efforts. The Miaoli County Hakka Quyi Promotion Association will perform captivating traditional Hakka music, while the locally renowned Shan Shan Dance Art Workshop will stun the audience with their dance piece “Firecrackers Celebrate a Bumper Harvest.” Hakka singing sensation Xiao Peiru will also perform beautiful Hakka songs. Additionally, the event will offer nostalgic DIY activities such as eco-friendly maltose drums and Hakka pressed preserved mustard greens, to promote the spirit of Hakka culture.

Tianchuan Day is one of the important festivals in Hakka culture. Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a huge hole in the sky, and Nüwa mended it with five-colored stones to save humanity. To show gratitude to Nüwa, people later set aside their work on this day to let the earth rest and recover, making sweet rice cakes and inserting colorful threads as offerings. This tradition evolved into singing mountain songs for entertainment in Hakka villages. In 2010 (the 99th year of the Republic of China), the Council for Hakka Affairs designated Tianchuan Day as the “National Hakka Day.” Since then, various Hakka communities have held lively celebrations, attracting enthusiastic participation from visitors across the country.
