The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration and Merida Bikes have jointly organized the Sun Moon Lake Cycling Event, which is now in its ninth year. This year’s event will take place on April 28 and features routes designed for different types of cycling enthusiasts, including a 65-kilometer brave rider route and a 10-kilometer scenic bike path ride. Registration is open now until March 25, with a limit of 4,000 participants.

To satisfy the adventurous spirit of cycling thrill-seekers, the brave rider route features an elevation gain of up to 900 meters and, for the first time, extends into Xinyi Township. Along the Zhuoshui River, cyclists will pass through the Minhe Tunnel, taking in the majestic views of the Zhuoshui River Valley and feeling the energy of the land that nourishes life in Taiwan. Next, they’ll go through Dili and, under the statue of tribal spirit in Damalan (the former name of Dili), imagine the history and ethos of the tribe, as well as admire the uniquely tribal-style Catholic church. Turning into the Tan Nan Forest Road, riders will visit Tan Nan Elementary School, built with traditional Bunun-style family homes, to explore the tranquility hidden within the rugged mountains and feel the unspoiled sounds of nature acting as a natural cheerleader. Then comes the challenge of a 10-kilometer continuous climb with over 400 meters of elevation gain. The 10-kilometer Sun Moon Lake Bike Path Ride, on the other hand, allows for a leisurely journey surrounded by beautiful mountains and water, offering the unique experience of cycling on the water.
In conjunction with Sun Moon Lake’s Starlight and Firefly Season, the first 100 pairs of cyclists who register for the event together can join the exclusive Merrell-planned nighttime waterside firefly walk on the evening of April 27 for free. Led by professional guides, participants will enjoy an ecological night tour and receive a commemorative gift.
Besides Sun Moon Lake, firefly-watching activities or accommodation packages guided by professionals will also be offered from April 1 to May 30 in Taomi Community in Puli Town, Lotus Pond in Yuchi Township, Tou She, the Sun Moon Lake Specialty Study Center, and various Sun Moon Lake hotels.
