2010 Miaoli County International Arts Festival - "Impressions of Yunnan"
Do you remember the series of arts events held during the Deaflympics Arts Month at the Taipei 2009 Deaflympics? The highly acclaimed "Impressions of Yunnan" left a deep impression on everyone. Those who missed it last time now have another chance. The 2010 Miaoli County International Arts Festival has specially invited "Impressions of Yunnan" to perform, bringing an extraordinary international-level show of primal ethnic song, dance, and light to the Miaoli Dome from October 29th to 31st.
Miaoli and Yunnan—one is a mountain city in Taiwan, the other a mountain city on the mainland. Though far apart, these two mountain cities share similarities in natural environment and diverse tourism resources. Since the launch of direct cross-strait flights, people have had more opportunities to enjoy artistic and cultural performances from the mainland.
"Impressions of Yunnan" is a stage masterpiece that combines traditional beauty with modern vitality. It is a fresh integration and reconstruction of the most authentic and original folk songs and dances of Yunnan, as well as classic ethnic dances, recreating the rich ethnic flavor of Yunnan. In the performance, primal and rustic ethnic songs and dances collide with cutting-edge artistic concepts. The entire show encompasses nature and the universe, human emotion, as well as a reflection on the origin of life, a tribute to the journey of life, and a longing for eternal life.
The performance consists of various acts including Cloud (Prologue / The Beginning of Chaos), Sun (The Sun), Moon (The Earth), Forest (Home), Fire (Fire Ritual), Mountain (Pilgrimage), and Feather (Epilogue / Spirit of the Peacock). Led by renowned dancer Yang Liping, the “Peacock Princess,” the show features 85 dancers, the drumming spirit of 62 drums, and 120 masks with distinctive Yunnan ethnic characteristics. With extremely simple singing and body language, it showcases the charm of original folk songs and dances of the Yi, Miao, Tibetan, Dai, Bai, Hani, and Wa ethnic groups. British tourists who have seen the "Dance of Fire" even mentioned that the impact of "Impressions of Yunnan" surpassed that of the "Dance of Fire"—a testament to just how spectacular the content is.
