Gongchen Pagoda

Gongchen Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingxiang City.

Gongchen Pagoda stands atop Dabao Mountain in Chishan Town, Shangli County. According to the *Pingxiang County Annals*, “Gongchen Pagoda is located in Chishan Market, Zunhua Township, and was jointly constructed by local residents in the ninth year of the Tongzhi reign.” The name of the pagoda is derived from the *Analects of Confucius*, Chapter "Wei Zheng" (On Governance), where Confucius says, “To govern with virtue is like the North Star: it remains in its place while all the other stars revolve around it.”

The pagoda has nine stories and eight sides, with the ground floor built from granite. The levels above are constructed from flat white bricks. Between each story, long strips of granite form eaves, and each level features four arched window openings. The pagoda is 28 meters tall, with a base diameter of 6.4 meters and a base circumference of 21.28 meters.

The ancient pagoda has been struck by lightning multiple times but only sustained damage to its top. It was also riddled with bullet holes during attacks by Japanese forces. Yet, for over a hundred years, it has stood firm as a rock atop Dabao Mountain, fully demonstrating the exceptional architectural artistry of China’s working people.
