Wang Erxian Temple

Wang Erxian Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingxiang City.

Wang Erxian Temple is located in Miaobei Village, Jiguan Mountain Township, Shangli County. During the Zhengtong era (1436–1449) of the Ming Emperor Yingzong’s reign, a Taoist master from Wangshijian in the eastern part of Liuyang City, Hunan Province, came to reside in a cave here. Known for his wisdom and compassion, he was highly skilled in medicine, treating local villagers free of charge. He generously helped those in need, lived a simple life, and maintained a vegetarian diet amid a meat-eating society for decades without wavering. On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the fourth year of the TianShun era (1460 AD), he passed away in meditation.

In gratitude for his great kindness and virtue, local residents held a groundbreaking ceremony in the sixth year of the TianShun era (1462 AD) during the Mid-Autumn Festival to build the temple and establish a long-term place of worship. For over 500 years, it has enjoyed flourishing incense offerings.

During the Agrarian Revolutionary period, a Soviet government was once established here. Many Communists and revolutionary activists took refuge and carried out revolutionary activities in this temple.
