Shangli Wanshou Palace is a cultural heritage site protected by Shangli County.

Shangli Wanshou Palace is located by the Lishui River on Beishang Street in Shangli Town, Shangli County. It was first built in the winter month of the Renzi year, the fifth year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (December 1372 AD). At that time, it consisted of four halls—front, middle, rear, and left—with a total area of over 2,100 square meters, a construction area of 1,748 square meters, and a height of 3.5 meters. The main gate featured an embedded Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor’s imperial edict plaque inscribed with the word “Imperial Decree.”

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, severe flooding plagued the Nanchang area. Legend has it that Xu Xun (also known as Xu Zhenjun) subdued the evil dragon, thereby putting an end to the water disasters. In the second year of the Zhenghe era during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (1112 AD), Xu Xun was posthumously honored as the “Divine and Miraculous True Lord.” Temples were built across the country in his memory, and he was revered as the “Thunder Method Deity” and the “Benefactor of All Under Heaven.” Numerous books praising Xu Xun were also published. Due to historical changes and political needs, the temple suffered severe damage but has since been restored and largely returned to its original appearance.

Shangli Town: Located in the northern part of Pingxiang and on the border between Hunan and Jiangxi, Shangli Town is the seat of the county government and serves as the political, economic, cultural, transportation, and commercial hub of the entire county.
