King Chu Terrace

King Chu Terrace is a cultural heritage site protected by Shangli County.

King Chu Terrace is located on Chushan Mountain in Tongmu Town, Shangli County. In the early Tang Dynasty, Han Yu, then serving as an official in Chaozhou, passed through this area on his way to Yuanzhou and left a poem in which he wrote, "The people still cherish the virtues of old, a humble thatched hut enshrines King Chu."

Qing dynasty scholar Xu Shengwu also noted, "Chushan Mountain rises from the earth amid white clouds; a temple was built here to honor King Zhao of Chu. One night, a storm relocated the temple down the mountain, yet villagers still flock here daily to pray."

The Temple of King Zhao of Chu, having long suffered from termite damage, now retains only a few walls and the stone gate frame. A stone tablet measuring 70 cm in height and 30 cm in width bears the inscription “King Chu Terrace” at the top and “Shrine of the Sacred King Zhao” in the center. A incense burner from the Qianlong era is also preserved. In recent years, thanks to attention from local government and efforts by villagers, the Temple of King Zhao of Chu has gradually been restored to its original appearance.

King Chu Terrace was once the military mustering and garrisoning ground of King Zhao of Chu. The reconstructed “ZhenSheng Temple” covers an area of 300 square meters and is a modern replica of ancient architecture. With a floor space of 180 square meters, the temple faces south and is situated to the north. The protected zone extends 100 meters around the terrace, while the construction control zone spans 200 meters, with a maximum allowable building height of 10 meters.
