Former Site of the Pingliuli Uprising Headquarters

The former site of the Pingliuli Uprising Headquarters is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The former site of the Pingliuli Uprising Headquarters—Mashi Dragon King Temple—is located on Mashi Street in Xiaoshui Village, Jinshan Town, Shangli County. Originally covering an area of 1,100 square meters, it was first built during the Tang Dynasty and underwent multiple renovations and expansions over time. It was refurbished again in 2003. The building features the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty. After the renovation, it has a construction area of 500 square meters, faces south with its back to the north, and the protected area includes a 20-meter radius around the opposite stage, a 30-meter construction control zone, and a maximum building height limit of 10 meters.

This site is located at the junction of Pingxiang, Liuyang, and Liling counties (cities). In the winter of 1906, the Pingliuli Uprising, led and initiated by the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance), took place here.

In August 1905, Dr. Sun Yat-sen founded the Tongmenghui in Tokyo, Japan. It served as a unifying banner that rallied people across the nation for revolutionary struggle. The Tongmenghui actively promoted revolutionary ideas across various regions, awakening the public’s awareness to fight for change. On one hand, it vigorously initiated armed uprisings, determined to overthrow the feudal rule of the Qing Dynasty and establish a new democratic republic. The Pingliuli Uprising served as an unprecedented dress rehearsal for the later Xinhai Revolution and wrote a glorious chapter in the annals of China’s modern revolutionary history.
