The Middle and Upper Proterozoic National Nature Reserve
The Middle and Upper Proterozoic National Nature Reserve is a national nature reserve.
The Middle and Upper Proterozoic National Nature Reserve is located north of Jizhou County in Tianjin, east of the road from Jizhou County to Huangyaguan. It is China’s first national geological nature reserve. The standard stratigraphic section of the Middle and Upper Proterozoic strata was formed between 1.8 and 0.8 billion years ago, beginning at Changzhou Village in the northeast corner of the county. The strata extend in a northeast to southwest direction, layer upon layer, all the way to Fojun Mountain near the county town. The reserve stretches approximately 24 kilometers from north to south and averages about 350 meters in width from east to west. The strata here are complete, continuously exposed, well-preserved, and rich in paleontological fossils. A display hall has been established within the reserve.
The reserve features overlapping mountains and beautiful scenery, with the winding Huangyaguan Great Wall to the north
, the ancient cultural hub of Yuyang Ancient County to the south, Panshan Mountain—known as the “First Mountain East of the Capital”—to the west, and the Qingdongling Tombs and Baxianzhuozi Nature Reserve adjacent to the east, making it an excellent destination for sightseeing.
