Tianjin Jizhou Karst Cave Scenic Area
The Tianjin Jizhou Karst Cave Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.
The Jizhou Karst Cave is situated at the foot of Lingqi Mountain, north of Hongshuizhuang Village, Luozhuangzi Town, Jixian County, Tianjin. It lies 12 kilometers from Jixian County, 100 kilometers from Beijing, 127 kilometers from downtown Tianjin, 220 kilometers from Chengde, 248 kilometers from Qinhuangdao, and 80 kilometers from Tangshan. To the north, it borders Jinhai Lake in Pinggu, Beijing; to the west, it faces the nationally renowned Panshan Mountain across the range, and to the east, it connects with the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall. The Jinfeng Highway runs through the area. The cave is named after Jizhou, the former name of Jixian County.
The Jizhou Karst Cave developed within the dolomite strata of the Hongshuizhuang Formation of the Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic Changcheng System. It is located within the Jixian Section of the “Tianjin Jixian National Geopark” and dates back approximately 1.2 billion years. According to surveys and calculations by national geological authorities, the developable area spans up to one million square meters, making it the largest of its kind in North China.
The first phase of development covers approximately 30,000 square meters, with the cave stretching 1,200 meters in length. At the center of the scenic area, there is an interconnected three-level horizontal karst cave system, featuring as many as 28 prominent attractions. The cave formations are crystal-clear, diverse in shape, and dazzlingly beautiful, leaving visitors mesmerized.
New
This refers to the fact that the Jizhou Karst Cave is a dolomite structural fissure-type cave. Such karst caves with significant tourism value are relatively rare in Northern China and even across the country, making this a new discovery.
Unique
This highlights the spectacular and colorful stone flower formations created by splashing and misty water sprays. In the words of highly authoritative geologists, these are the most numerous and beautiful stone flowers found in caves across Northern China and even the entire nation—a remarkable wonder.
One-of-a-kind
This refers to the massive stone pillar forest area, which gives visitors a sense of mystery and wonder, as if entering a Bagua (Eight Trigrams) maze. Among China’s karst caves, only the Jizhou Karst Cave features this unique sight.
Exceptional
This points to the grand and majestic wall-flowstone formations, such as the stone waterfall that cascades like a Milky Way or flows backward like the Yellow River; the delicate stone curtains that trickle down like murmuring streams; and the unparalleled fish-scale waterfall—all considered national treasures of the Jizhou Karst Cave. In addition, there are four particularly astonishing and awe-inspiring sights: First, “Dragon Soaring Across the Sea.” Here, two stone dragons are present—one a large dragon about 40-plus meters long, soaring above the cave ceiling; the other a golden little dragon shooting up the wall, hiding its head and revealing its tail, vividly lifelike. Second, the “Stone Flower Corridor.” The cave walls here are covered with uniquely shaped stone flowers. Under the light, they resemble a star-studded night sky, dazzlingly brilliant, or a tapestry woven from myriad blooming flowers—sparkling and resplendent, making one feel as if entering a treasure-filled dragon palace. Third, “Stone Buddha Watching the Waterfall.” At the top of the third level of the cave sits a stone Buddha resembling Guanyin, cross-legged in meditation, with an upside-down lotus lantern above its head. Beside the cave entrance is a stone monkey. The cave walls on both sides resemble the Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River, with a momentum that echoes the verse “Waterfalls plunge three thousand feet, as if the Milky Way fell from the ninth heaven.” Fourth: the massive stone pillar forest area. At the southeastern end of the cave are seven gigantic stone pillars with diameters of 25 meters, 18 meters, 13 meters, 12 meters, and 8 meters, respectively. The exposed heights of these pillars range from 6 to 15 meters. Among them, the pillar named “Pillar Reaching the Heavens” has a circumference of nearly 100 meters. These sights can be considered among the best in China. Other attractions such as the Dragon Palace, Celestial Paradise, Penglai Seeking Medicine, Moon Palace Osmanthus Tree, Bodhi Fairyland, and Beiming Divine Palace are all spectacular. Industry experts have commented that this karst cave meets the standards of medium to large-sized caves (500 meters for medium, over 1,000 meters for large) in terms of both scale and landscape.
Meditation is practiced here, with lotus-shaped lamps hanging upside down above the head, and the stone monkey at the cave entrance marked as 0. The stone walls on both sides resemble the majestic Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River, their grandeur evoking the poetic line, "The cataract sounds like thunder as it plunges three thousand feet; one might mistake it for the Milky Way falling from the ninth heaven." Fourth: the massive stone pillar forest area. At the southeastern end of the karst cave, there are seven enormous stone pillars with diameters of 25 meters, 18 meters, 13 meters, 12 meters, and 8 meters respectively. These pillars rise to exposed heights ranging from 6 to 15 meters. Among them, the towering pillar named "Pillar Reaching the Heavens" spans nearly 100 meters in circumference. These features can be considered among the finest in China. Other attractions such as the Dragon Palace, Heavenly Paradise, Penglai Seeking Medicine, Moon Palace Osmanthus Trees, Bodhi Immortal Realm, and Beiming Divine Palace are all equally spectacular. According to expert commentary in the industry: this karst cave meets the standards of a medium to large-scale cave (500 meters is considered medium, over 1000 meters is large), both in terms of size and scenic splendor.
