Yanwo Mountain Scenic Area
Yanwo Mountain Scenic Area
Yanwo Mountain Scenic Area is located at the northern tip of Daishan Island, 16 kilometers from the county town. The entire scenic area covers approximately 2 square kilometers, and its main attraction consists of sea-eroded pillars and reefs formed over millions of years by the constant scouring of seawater. These formations resemble bamboo shoots and are thus called Yanwo (Swallow’s Nest) Stone Bamboo. The site stretches about 300 meters in length and 100 meters in width, featuring diverse shapes, varying in height, size, and hue that mimic real bamboo shoots. They appear and disappear with the rise and fall of the waves,
creating a stunning seascape of sea rocks. About 2 kilometers northwest of this site lies a bay scattered with pebbles along the shore, known as Caishi Pond (Colorful Stone Pond). Other attractions include Xiangpeng Wanghai (Gazing at the Sea from Xiangpeng), Tongpan Lingtao (Listening to the Waves at Tongpan), and Taolin Chunxiao (Peach Grove at Dawn). The area can be directly accessed by car from the county town. The main theme of this scenic zone is: camping and holiday resort.
On the basis of existing attractions, the scenic area is currently planning to develop seven additional scenic spots.
(1) Entrance area composed of a parking lot, Feiyan Pavilion, collection zone, shopping mall,
and dining services; (2) forest recreation area consisting of forest cabins, hanging caves, and a sea-access path; (3) sea rock sightseeing area with lawns, stone bamboos, viewing platforms, and a suspension bridge; (4)
barbecue area featuring a barbecue pavilion and a stainless steel landmark on Mantou Mountain; (5)
sightseeing area with attractions such as Yifanfengshun (Smooth Sailing), Chenxi Platform (Dawn Platform), and Xingxiang Platform (Star Observation Platform); (6) gravel beach leisure area comprising Diegong Fanying (Layered Sail Shadows) and Caitian Zhengyan (Colorful Pond in Bloom); (7) camping and holiday area with camping tents, Ancient Cannon Majesty, and Taoshu Chunxiao (Peach Tree at Dawn). Once completed, the scenic area will integrate dining, accommodation, travel, sightseeing, and leisure, forming a new landscape where mountains, sea, beaches, rocks, and architecture complement one another.
Contest of Colorful Stones
Northwest of Yanwo Stone Bamboo lies Caishi Pond, about 1,000 meters in length. The pebbles in the pond come in various colors such as black, yellow, gray, and red. Over years of seawater erosion, they have become smooth and round, each with a unique shape. When soaked in water, these pebbles display vibrant colors and a dazzling gloss, rivaling the famous Yuhua Stones of the south, making them excellent souvenirs.
Gazing at the Sea from Xiangpeng
Across the water from Caishi Pond lies a small isolated island called Xiangpeng Mountain. This mountain, with its peculiar shape and solitary stance, juts abruptly out of the sea and is surrounded by many legends, giving it a legendary aura. It is said that ships sailing from the Shanghai area would spot this tiny Xiangpeng Mountain first upon exiting the Yangtze River estuary, and the further they sailed, the larger it appeared. Legend has it that when Xu Fu was searching for the immortality elixir for Emperor Qin Shi Huang, he first spotted this mountain before finding Penglai Immortal Island (Daishan). Hence, the name Xiangpeng Mountain. Another tale says that Xu Fu planted several wind-resistant vines on the mountain, which for centuries have cured many islanders suffering from colds and chills. Standing alone in the sea, with no obstructions on three sides, the mountain offers an expansive view and is an ideal spot to admire the mountain and sea beauty of the Zhoushan Archipelago. The scenic area plans to build a cableway connecting Yanwo Mountain, allowing visitors to enjoy the thrill of soaring above the sea and gazing across the vast ocean.
Listening to the Waves at Tongpan
Tongpan Mountain is a small peninsula-like extension of land reaching into the sea, tightly connected to Yanwo Mountain. Surrounded by sea on three sides, the mountain is lush with vegetation, while its base is battered by surging waves, presenting a scene of both clarity and grandeur. Especially at Tongpan Bay on the north shore of Yanwo Mountain, there are over a dozen gullies and small reef flats. When the tide rises, the waves rush into the gullies and crash against the reefs, producing a variety of awe-inspiring sounds. If you lie quietly on the mountain, listening to the thunderous waves echoing from below, it is both refreshing and melodious.
