Shima'ao Martyrs' Cemetery

Shima'ao Martyrs' Cemetery is a patriotic education base.

Shima'ao Martyrs' Cemetery is located on a hillside at the border of Shima'ao and Xieqiao'ao villages in Gaoting Town, Daishan County. In June 1994, it was named a patriotic education base of Zhoushan City. Starting from 1954, martyrs who died for the revolution and development of Daishan were successively laid to rest here, making it the largest martyrs' cemetery in Daishan. In 1960, to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending and building the country’s coastal defenses, the former Shima'ao Production Team of Daizhong Commune erected a stone monument southwest of the martyrs’ burial ground, inscribed with the words: “Eternal Glory to the Martyrs Who Sacrificed Their Lives Defending the Motherland and Building Zhoushan.” In November 1989, the Civil Affairs Bureau of Daishan County and the former People's Government of Daizhong Township built a new Revolutionary Martyrs Monument and Memorial Plaza. The monument stands 7.5 meters tall, with a base covering about 4 square meters.

At the end of 2008, the Daishan County Party Committee and County Government decided to renovate the martyrs' cemetery, investing over 1.5 million yuan. The project was completed by the end of March 2009. The renovated cemetery covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters and is divided into five main sections: the main entrance, plaza area, memorial monument area, martyrs’ tomb area, and comrades’ tomb area. The newly built monument is 15 meters tall, consisting of the main body and base. The front of the monument is inscribed with eight large characters: “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs,” while the base lists the names of 274 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the revolution in Daishan. There are a total of 116 martyrs’ tombs in Shima'ao Martyrs' Cemetery, currently housing the remains of 80 martyrs. In the future, the remains of over 20 additional martyrs scattered across the island will also be interred here. The comrades’ tomb area contains 28 burial plots, currently holding the remains of 21 comrades.

For a long time, Shima'ao Martyrs' Cemetery has served as a site for the people of Daishan to pay tribute to the martyrs, commemorate their deeds, learn from their spirit, and provide patriotic education and moral guidance to both the public and young people. Every year during the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and “July 1st” period, a large number of local cadres, residents, primary and secondary school students, as well as People’s Liberation Army and armed police officers and soldiers, spontaneously visit the cemetery for memorial activities. To further enhance the role of the patriotic education base, lectures on the history of the Communist Party, military history, and the revolutionary struggles of martyrs are regularly invited to be given by military officers and retired local officials at the cemetery, greatly strengthening the educational impact.

To strengthen the management of the martyrs' cemetery, full-time management personnel have been assigned to oversee daily operations.
