Dongsha Seafood Processing Workshop
The seafood processing workshop is located at No. 147–149 Jiefang Road, Dongsha Community, Dongsha Town, Daishan County, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. The main surviving feature of the workshop is the ground-standing barrels, which were specialized vessels used in Daishan for salting yellow croaker into dried fish (commonly known as “Three-Cut Head”). Locally, these are referred to as “barrel mouths.”
Originally, there were many such barrels, but today 40 ground-standing barrels remain—27 in the northern production area and 13 in the southern area. All barrel mouths are covered by roofs built over houses or sheds. The barrels came from various fishing merchants and fish factories, varying in size. Due to years of salt and brine storage, they are extremely salty and have not rotted to this day. The surviving barrels are mainly made of Chinese fir, with diameters of 2–5 meters and depths of about 2–3 meters. Large barrels can hold over 200 dan of fish (1 dan = 100 jin), medium barrels around 150 dan, and small barrels approximately 70–80 dan. Most of the barrels are buried underground, with their openings protruding 25–30 cm above the ground. The surroundings are paved with stone slabs, preserving the original appearance and offering high historical value.
Dongsha Community: Located at the northwest tip of Daishan Island, Dongsha Community was formed in June 2005 through the administrative merger of the former Dongsha Community and Nianmu Village. It covers a total area of 4 square kilometers and has a population of 5,044, with 2,586 households. Among them, 1,836 residents are aged 60 or older, accounting for 36.4% of the total population. The community has one Party general branch committee, five Party branches, 24 Party groups, and 228 Party members. The community’s leading industry is manufacturing, and various small-scale family workshops, toy and packaging enterprises below designated size have seen rapid development, with output value increasing year after year. The area also includes shrimp farming operations... More details on Dongsha Community++
