Former Residence of Chao Weifang

The former residence of Chao Weifang is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The former residence of Chao Weifang is located at No. 75, Dongxiaonanmen, Mengcheng Village Committee, Menghe Town, Xinbei District. Originally built in the 34th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1908), the residence originally had four courtyards, but only the third courtyard remains today. It is a two-story brick-and-wood structure with a flush gable roof and features exquisite wood carvings. Between 2015 and 2016, the residence underwent comprehensive restoration, which restored the original first and second courtyards, the young lady’s building, the kitchen, as well as renovated the backyard garden and surrounding walls.

Chao Weifang (1869–1929) was a representative figure of the Menghe Medical School. He received authentic training in medicine from Ma Peizhi and excelled in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics, with particular expertise in treating typhoid fever. He authored a volume titled “Chao Weifang’s Medical Discourses.” His son Chao Shaofang, grandson Chao Nianzu, and great-grandson Chao Chongqing all inherited the family medical tradition, practicing medicine for generations in Menghe, Wansui, and other local areas, serving the local community.

In 2019, the former residence of Chao Weifang was included in the eighth batch of cultural relic protection units of Jiangsu Province.

Menghe Town: In 2003, as part of an administrative division adjustment in Xinbei District, the former Xiaohé Town and Menghe Town were merged to form Menghe Town. In 2011, with approval from the provincial government, the Jiangsu Xinbei Modern Agricultural Industrial Park was established. In 2015, the Jiangsu Xinbei Modern Agricultural Industrial Park and Menghe Town adopted a unified “park-town integrated” management system and began operating jointly. The Xinbei Modern Agricultural Industrial Park (Menghe Town) lies to the north against the Yangtze River and the 10,000-mu forest park of Little Huangshan, borders Chunjiang Town to the east, faces Xilaiqiao Town of Yangzhong in Zhenjiang to the northeast, connects to Xixiashu Town to the south, and adjoins Gaogiao and the Little Huangshan mountain range of Danyang, Zhenjiang to the west...
