Stargazing inside a crystal ball? New Taipei unveils Taiwan’s first “bubble” campsite

Since its launch in April, New Taipei City’s first public camping area, the Bali Cultural Park Camping Zone, has attracted many visitors. Now, operators have introduced the concept of French bubble hotels, exclusively creating 8 healing“bubble domes”where guests can lie back and admire the starry sky, enjoying a more nature-immersive camping experience. Online reservations are expected to open on May 16.

Mr. Zhou, director of the bubble domes, explained that their official name is “spherical tents,” a concept originating in France that allows people to interact most harmoniously with their environment. He noted that the materials used in French bubble domes were unsuitable for Taiwan’s island climate, and that the materials needed to be carefully selected—too thin and they’d deform or break, too thick and they’d require excessive pressure to inflate. After a year of searching for the right materials and developing them exclusively, the current product was finally completed.

Mr. Zhou said that the first phase will see 8 bubble domes installed at the Bali Cultural Park Camping Zone in New Taipei City,including 2 fully transparent bubble domes serving as restaurants and 6 semi-transparent ones offering lodging. Each lodging bubble dome is equipped with a TV, air conditioning, a double bed, and bedding, accommodating 2–4 people; with milky-white “walls” on both sides blocking the view, only the top is transparent, so guests don’t have to worry about being seen like in *The Truman Show*.

As the restaurant menu is not yet finalized, Mr. Zhou stated,the initial 2 fully transparent bubble restaurants will only be available to guests with booked bubble dome accommodations. Visitors may bring their own meals to eat inside, with each bubble restaurant accommodating up to 6 people. The long-term goal is to increase the number of bubble domes here to 16.

Mr. Zhou also shared the original vision behind setting up the bubble domes: to allow travelers to camp and connect with nature through the concept of “light travel.” “While traditional tents already help people get close to nature, they’re relatively heavy,” he said. With bubble domes, travelers no longer need to haul tents around. Lying in a bubble and gazing at the stars or breathtaking sea views allows them to experience nature’s beauty without any obstructions. Plus, these domes are often set up in scenic areas, so besides camping, visitors can also explore nearby attractions during the day using light transportation—the biggest difference from traditional tent camping.

Mr. Zhou mentioned that they have already contacted other scenic areas such as Xiaoyeliu Camping Zone, Nantou, Yilan, and Kenting. The long-term vision is to have bubble domes in every county and city across Taiwan, not only allowing Taiwanese travelers to enjoy the unique natural beauty and landscapes of different regions but also attracting international visitors to stay and experience Taiwan’s unparalleled beauty more deeply.
