As fans of unique libraries, we’ve visited the Luzhou Ren’ai Smart Library, New Taipei City Library Main Branch, New Taipei City Public Library Jiangzicui Branch, New Taipei City Public Library Sanxia Peinan Branch, New Taipei City Public Library Luzhou Chang’an Branch, and New Taipei City Linkou Dongshi Reading Room. We discovered that New Taipei City has so many distinctive libraries, and this time we came tothe New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch and were amazed to find that a library could transform into a “music-themed experience space.”How incredible!
That day, I made plans with Fei Ma to bring Xiu Ge to the library, specifically choosing the newly reopened and conveniently located New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch. It’s right near a metro station, and uniquely, there’s a public market and a PX Mart downstairs — just like the New Taipei City Linkou Dongshi Reading Room we visited before, which is also located above a public market!

The New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch was closed for renovation in 2017 and reopened with a bright and clean exterior.

We came especially for the “Children’s Reading Room” — a spacious and comfy area dedicated solely to kids, separated from the general reading zones. Here, they can run around and let off steam when they get tired of reading, free from restrictions. We love this kind of reading environment, and the thoughtfully designed space is both beautiful and full of childlike charm!

The central bookshelves are curved in an arc, wrapping around the entire seating area, with seats in the middle. Kids can easily grab a book and find a spot to sit and read — super convenient!

There are also bookshelves and seating on both sides.
Xiu Ge naturally picked up a picture book and started reading. The cozy atmosphere makes kids fall in love with the place as soon as they step inside!
This huge Mickey Mouse figure is so eye-catching! The wooden floor area it guards has a space where you can take off your shoes and sit anywhere — perfect for parent-child reading.
I love this adorable reading nook! The kids sitting in the cute little reading house look so sweet, and there’s even a vehicle-shaped bookshelf that instantly caught the attention of car-loving Xiu Ge!
But what the kids love most is the “Children’s Toy Room” at the New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch! It opens at 9 AM every day, and there’s always a steady stream of kids coming in to play. The toys are incredibly diverse — big building blocks, dollhouse sets, toddler balance beams, educational toys, and construction blocks, with so many varieties!
We played with Xiu Ge — hiding in tents, building block castles — having an absolute blast!
The children’s reading room is equipped with restrooms, a nursing room, and a water dispenser, so families don’t have to go outside the library for basic needs. It’s really thoughtful!
Aside from the special children’s reading area, the reading space at the New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch is also very stylishly designed — with a light industrial, literary vibe that feels like stepping into a boutique café.
The library houses a rich and comprehensive collection of books.
There’s a large transparent multi-purpose room that irregularly screens films, hosts lectures, and runs workshops.
Since the 1960s to the 1980s, Sanchong was the largest producer of vinyl records in Taiwan, with nearly 90% of vinyls manufactured there. As a result, the New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch has specially created a “Vinyl Record Listening Area” to let older residents reminisce and help younger visitors learn about Sanchong’s history.
We were curious about what the big wooden door at the entrance meant with the large “331/3” written on it — turns out it refers to the rotation speed of vinyl records!
My knowledge of vinyl records isn’t deep; the only memory I have is from the movie “Infernal Affairs,” where the insert song “The Forgotten Time” plays. The “Vinyl Record Listening Area” at the New Taipei City Public Library Sanchong South Branch has several listening stations with early gramophones in the center and nostalgic vinyl records on both sides that bring elders back in time.
I initially thought these seats were just for display, but pressing the button actually plays music — even the littlest ones listen with great interest.
With around 8,000 vinyl records on display, featuring many classic artists and songs — even including late singer Chang Yu-sheng and retired singer Jiang Hui — it brings back a wave of nostalgia.
The central display area showcases early gramophones from various countries, along with cylinder phonographs, suitcase-style record players, pocket-sized radios, and steel disc music boxes, all telling precious memories that were once part of life and can never be erased.
The seating area is thoughtfully designed. Listening to nostalgic tunes while sitting down with a book creates a truly atmospheric experience — enjoy some alone time in this sea of literature.
The two themed experience rooms in the corner are sure to bring a smile.
Themed as a celebrity makeup area, these rooms play classic Mandarin songs from the 1950s to 1970s. With vanity tables, vintage telephones, posters, and gramophones... it feels as if you’re seeing stars getting ready for their stage performances. One room is designed for male entertainers and the other for female, both arranged perfectly.
From the cute, modern children's reading room to the retro “vinyl listening area,” visiting the Sanchong South Branch of New Taipei City Public Library feels like stepping into a time tunnel. The incredible reading experience makes it hard to return to reality even after leaving the building. This uniquely charming library is perfect for an alternative literary journey.
