The Zhao Dong style of Chinese painting originated in the early 1960s. In the late 1970s, renowned painter Chi Chunju, while serving as head of the art group at the Zhao Dong City Cultural Center, established Chinese painting creation groups in both urban and rural areas. Starting with the most basic techniques, he patiently guided amateur artists, and most of them later became key figures in the creation of Zhao Dong-style paintings. By the 1980s, a creative community of about 400 painters had formed.

Zhao Dong City boasts abundant resources and a simple, sincere folk culture. The Zhao Dong Chinese painting community focuses not only on the unique ice and snow landscapes of the north, capturing the vast, desolate, profound, and mysterious atmosphere of the northern wilderness, but also on portraying hometown pastoral scenes—skies, wildlands, woods, meadows, alkali plains, reed marshes, villages, fences, birds, beasts, and livestock—all brought to life through the artists’ brushstrokes. At the same time, they delve into the local customs and folklore, using their artistry to tell moving legends. On this black soil, a great number of Chinese painting talents have emerged, including Chi Chunju, Yang Diansheng, Zheng Shenglu, Huo Feng, Chi Yingxin, and Gao Feng.

In recent years, Zhao Dong-style paintings have won numerous awards in major national exhibitions and have secured a place in the contemporary Chinese painting scene. Their works exude a rich local flavor, and their simple yet distinctive fine-brush painting style has become a signature hallmark of Zhao Dong painting. He Jingzhi, former Vice Minister of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Culture, once inscribed for the Zhao Dong painting community: “True beauty lies in life, and true talent resides among the people.” The master of Chinese painting Huang Zhou also spoke highly of Zhao Dong paintings, saying: “Zhao Dong paintings are the living pictures of the people of Zhao Dong.”
