123 Indigenous Harvest Festivals to Kick Off in Taitung This July

The indigenous harvest festivals (Harvest Celebrations) hosted by various ethnic groups in Taitung County will be held successively in different tribal villages from July and run through September 9, with a total of 123 events. The duration of each event ranges from 2 to 8 days. Major festivals include the Katiu Bunun Harvest Festival in Taitung City on July 14, the East Rukai Harvest Festival of Dongxing Tribe in Beinan Township on July 20, the Joint Harvest Festival of Changbin Township on July 20–21, the “Makapahai” Cultural Tourism Event hosted by Taitung City Government starting July 21, and the Joint Harvest Festival in Guanxi Township on August 18.

The Amis events include: Sanmin Li Ma?? Tribe today (5th), Xiaoma Tribe in Chenggong Township and Yonglong Tribe in Luye Township on the 7th, Jialulan Tribe in Taitung City on the 8th, ?Tong Tribe in Beinan Township on the 9th, Beiyuan Village Axiculay Tribe in Donghe Township and Heping Tribe and Minfeng Tribe in Chenggong Township on the 10th, Alabawan Tribe in Donghe Township and Qi Tribe in Chenggong Township on the 11th, Busong Tribe and Aruxilay Tribe in Taitung City and Shanli Tribe in Beinan Township on the 13th. The 14th sees the highest number of concurrent events, with about 19 tribes across Taitung City, Taimali Township, Donghe Township, Changbin Township, and Luye Township participating. Most events take place in July, with the final festival scheduled for September 9 at Meihua Kanasole Tribe.

For the Kavalan people, there is the Kavalan Tribal Sea Festival at the Kavalan Activity Center in Changbin Township on July 7, and another Sea Festival on July 15. The Bunun people hold the Harvest Festival of the Katiu Tribe in Zhiben, Taitung City from July 9–17, the Liya and Xiabinlang Tribes in Beinan Township on July 14, the Tai’an, Chulu, and Aruipei Tribes in Beinan Township on July 15, as well as the Nanhua Puyuma Tribe Sea Festival in Taitung City on July 21 (at the mouth of the Taiping River behind Taitung High School), featuring a welcome event at 3 PM at the Nanhua Balakuan of the event center, and the Jianhe Tribe in Taitung City on July 22. The Paiwan people start with the Jiada Tribe in Jin Feng Township, Tudaban Tribe in Daren Township, Dulalan and Baluchu chiefs, and the Long Tribe in Taimali Township on July 13, continuing across various locations in Taitung County and City.
