Kaohsiung Yellow Butterfly Festival: Take a Shuttle to Explore Meinong Hakka Village

The Meinong Yellow Butterfly Festival has been held since 1995 and is now in its 17th year, making it one of the most representative summer events in Kaohsiung. The 17th edition of the Meinong Yellow Butterfly Festival will take place on July 14–15 in Huangdie Cuigu Valley, with activities kicking off as early as July 6 at the Meinong Story House with the exhibition “The Story of the Yellow Butterfly Festival.” On the exterior wall of the Story House, there will be 17 giant butterfly art pieces painted by local Meinong youth, the largest of which is a 5-meter-long yellow butterfly made up of 8 puzzle pieces. Additionally, over the two days of July 14 and 15, various themed activities are planned, including the Meinong Culture Walking Trail, Yellow Butterfly Train, Village Head Concert, Butterfly Worship Ceremony, and Forest Green Market. On July 14, the Meinong Culture Walking Trail and Yellow Butterfly Train will be guided tours led by interpreters, taking participants to visit the festival exhibition site and key cultural spots in Meinong. The cost is NT$100 per person for the walking trail and NT$200 for the train.

The Light Travel—Meinong Culture Walking Trail and Yellow Butterfly Train, both scheduled for July 14, will depart at 9:00 AM from Shuangfeng Park, located opposite Meinong Railway Station. The Light Travel itinerary is divided into Upper Village and Lower Village routes, featuring guided walking tours to historic Hakka sites such as the Old Bridge of Meinong, Lin Family Tobacco Barn, and Indigo Shirt Shop. The Yellow Butterfly Train will offer shuttle bus tours to attractions like Guangjinsheng (Lin Family Ancestral House), Fumei Road (Xianfeng Embankment), Wangye Altar (Temple of the Three Mountain Kings), Butterfly Park, and Zhong Lihe Memorial Hall, allowing participants to experience the cultural and ecological richness of Meinong.

To complement the “Yellow Butterfly Festival,” the Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau recommends visitors explore the Meinong Story House to view the “Story of the Yellow Butterfly Festival” exhibition. They can then continue to visit landmarks such as the Century-Old Public Well, Dongmen Tower, Hakka Cultural Museum, Lin Family Tobacco Barn, Jinan Hall, Guangjinsheng Paper Umbrellas, Shuangfeng Park, Zhongzheng Lake, the Old Bridge of Meinong, and return to the Story House. Alternatively, visitors can follow a route from the Story House to the Old Bridge, Yong’an Old Street, Lower Village Water Bridge, irrigation channels, Bo’ai Street (ancestral homes), Zhongshan Road (Tobacco Guidance Station), Hakka Cultural Museum, Meinong Railway Station, Shuangfeng Park, Zhongzheng Lake, Xihetang Alley, and back to the Story House.
