With changing consumer habits, traditional markets have been gradually declining. Recognizing the unfamiliarity of parents and young people with these markets — and the challenge of selecting ingredients here — Pingtung County Government has partnered with vendors at Pingtung Central Market to launch the “First-Time Market Experience,” allowing families to explore the market together, revisit cherished memories, and rediscover the value of traditional markets.
Today, seven families visited the central market. With a budget of NT$1,000 per family and limited to one hour, they had to purchase ingredients for three dishes. One participant joked that the vendors were incredibly cooperative — not only did they share cooking tips, but they also gave out chili peppers, old ginger, and even advice on how to store leftovers properly. “They’re really full of heart.”
Wu Jinghua, chairperson of the Central Business District Development Association, stated that the central market has a 60-year history and is the first public market in Pingtung City. In the past, the first and third sections used to be the fashion centers for Pingtung residents. But now, with the rise of affordable ready-made clothing and problems like inadequate parking, the market has gradually declined, and the once lively bustle is no longer there.
However, Wu expressed confidence, saying, “You can find everything here — they sell everything, and nothing is out of place.” She also revealed that in traditional markets, “asking questions” is key, since unlike supermarkets where fresh food sections are kept in refrigerators, vendors store goods in freezers and only take them out when customers ask for them — otherwise, they won’t be displayed.
Zhong Wanzheng, who brought her child to the event specially, said that in the past, her mother used to take her to the market, and now she’s doing the same with her own kid, turning market trips into a fun activity. Still, she sighed and said that the market used to be so lively, but it has declined quite a bit now.
