Birch Mountain Site

The Birch Mountain Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Liaoning Province.

The Birch Mountain Site is located 300 meters east of Sunjiatun Village, Gaojiabaozi Village, Longwangmiao Town. One and a half kilometers to the east lies the Birch Reservoir, to the south are hilly and mountainous areas, to the west is the plain, and to the north is Xitai Mountain. Settling here facing south not only helps avoid flooding but also shields from the northerly winds of the long winter.

The Birch Mountain Site is primarily distributed on the middle and upper parts of the southern slope of the mountain, covering an area in the shape of a rectangle, 200 meters in length from east to west and 100 meters in width from north to south, with a total area of 20,000 square meters. The entire southern slope of the mountain has relatively abundant surface artifacts scattered from west to east. At a depth of 30 centimeters below the surface lies a cultural deposit layer about 15 centimeters thick, composed of black soil. On the mountain ridge 200 meters east of the main peak, a broken brown granite stone axe was discovered, measuring 8 cm in length, 4.5 cm in width, and 1.5 cm in thickness.

The surface artifact concentration is relatively high in the northeastern part of the site. Collected on-site were fragments of reddish-brown and blackish-brown sandy pottery, including parts such as rims, bodies, bases, and handles. The vessel walls are relatively thin, with a higher sand content and lower talc powder content, and were fired at high temperatures.
