The Pingtung Black Marlin Cultural Tourism Festival kicks off today in full swing. This year’s event features themed artistic light displays, exclusive specialty food banquets, and short trips to Donggang, offering a rich and diverse experience. Now in its 17th year, the Black Marlin Festival has transformed the traditional fishing village culture, integrating local cultural, industrial, and tourism resources to promote Pingtung as the hometown of black marlin. Visitors can head to the Dadonggang area to join the festivities, enjoy fresh seafood, and have a fun-filled summer.

This year’s event includes artistic light displays, featuring eight sets of lights under three major themes: “Abundance of Fish and Water,” “The Three Treasures of Donggang,” and “Happy Donggang.” From now until June 30th, the lights will be illuminated every evening from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM along the Dapai River dike next to Guangfu Road in Donggang Township, adding a glowing ambiance to the night. After enjoying fresh seafood, visitors can also stroll through the artistic light-adorned streets.

And the specialty food banquet is not to be missed. On the evening of June 17th at 6:00 PM, Pingtung County Government has organized the “Donggang and Xiaoliuqiu Specialty Food Banquet” in front of Donglong Temple. Groups of 10 or more can enjoy a table of cuisine for just NT$2,500 per table, indulging together; if you can’t gather 10 people, individual sign-ups are also available. The menu includes authentic black marlin sashimi, oilfish roe, and other well-known delicacies, along with surprise gifts, free drinks, and a lucky draw. Reservations are limited, so book early.

The Donggang Food Tour will take participants to visit the Overseas Chinese Market, sample street snacks, and listen to stories about Donggang’s culture and people. The tour is priced at NT$399 per person and is open for registration. Additionally, during May and June, shoppers who spend over NT$1,000 at stores in Linbian, Donggang, or Xiaoliuqiu can exchange their receipts or invoices for a limited-edition black marlin sports towel. Exchange locations include the Pingtung County Government Tourism and Communications Division, Dapeng Bay Visitor Center, Liuqiu Management Station and Visitor Center, and the Tourism Bureau’s Information Booth – Wei Yi Food Store (open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Only 2,000 towels are available, so get them while they last.

In addition to the series of events at the Black Marlin Cultural Tourism Festival, there are also various nearby mini tours. Visitors can go to Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area to enjoy the sea breeze with coffee, admire the Pengwan Cross-Sea Bridge, experience water activities, and explore the wetland ecology of Donggang and Linbian. Or head to Nanzhou Sugar Refinery to try bamboo tube ice, roast sweet potatoes in an earthen oven, and soak in Japanese-style architecture and railway culture. In June, during the lotus blooming season, you can also visit [Ding] Top Ecological Park to admire the lotuses and pick up the famously fragrant [Ding] Top sesame oil as a souvenir. Alternatively, take a boat to Xiaoliuqiu to go snorkeling with turtles and explore intertidal ecosystems, enjoy stargazing night tours, and experience island charm different from Kenting.
