The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has created a new logo and slogan, “Tokyo Tokyo Old meets New” (the first “Tokyo” in Brushstroke font and the second in Gothic print), to effectively promote Tokyo’s attractions overseas. This logo will be used in various international promotional campaigns and also reflects the renewed energy sparked by the promotion of Tokyo 2020.

Slogan: Tokyo Tokyo Old meets New

The meaning behind this logo is as follows: the design featuring “Tokyo” in two different fonts visually conveys the city’s image. The “Tokyo” in Brushstroke font and the “Tokyo” in Gothic print represent the unique aspects of this city. Here, traditions dating back to the Edo period (1603–1867) coexist with cutting-edge modern culture.

Tradition is expressed in black ink, while the new Tokyo is represented in blue, reminiscent of an ever-expanding sky that symbolizes an innovative future. To add vibrancy and interest, the new logo also includes a traditional stamp featuring one of Tokyo’s latest tourist landmarks: the Shibuya Scramble Crossing.
