The opening of Pingtung County’s Black Marlin Cultural Tourism Season is entering the final countdown. The county government has continued last year’s “Summer Sakura Love” theme, which combines black marlin with sakura shrimp, by decorating Donggang Township with sakura lanterns, love-themed flower beds, Sakura Love chairs, and more, infusing the area with a romantic ambiance that showcases another charming side of Donggang.

The Pingtung County Government Tourism and Communications Department stated that with the addition of the new character “Sakura Beauty” to the Black Marlin Season, the event adopts a personified approach. Through Sakura Beauty and the black marlin “Chico” wandering around Donggang, visitors are introduced to local attractions and features, including Zhenhai Temple, Sea Wu, the Donggang River embankment, the Donggang Fishing Port Seafood Direct Sales Center (Overseas Chinese Market), as well as the Guangfu Road Japanese-style wooden bridge and Safety Island Park—six major sites that attract tourists to discover a different side of Donggang.

Nowadays, walking into Donggang Township, one can already see pink sakura lanterns lining the seafood street on Guangfu Road, resembling clusters of red cherry blossoms reflected on the water surface. Together with the greenery on both banks, it creates a stunning scene that is truly breathtaking. When night falls and the lanterns are lit, it feels as if the moon is hanging above the willow branches, turning the area into a “Sakura Love Path.” Meanwhile, the Safety Island Park on Guangfu Road features a wall photo area with Black Marlin Chico and Sakura Beauty, as well as Sakura Love chairs, making it an ideal spot for couples to meet.

The Jinde Bridge, connecting Donggang Township and Xinyuan Township, features a red basket-like design that echoes the Donggang River embankment. The county government has planned a “Heart Bridge Station” along the pedestrian walkway on the embankment, where the railings are adorned with floating sakura petals. Here, visitors can take photos with the beautiful rainbow bridge and create wonderful memories. Climbing to the top of Sea Wu offers a 360-degree panoramic view, with sights of Dawushan Mountain and Little Liuqiu in the distance, and the Donggang River, Gaoping River estuary, and fishing boats returning from sea operations up close. The county government has arranged a love-themed flower bed at the top of Wu, symbolizing a “sea of love.” When night falls, heart-shaped lights illuminate, adding even more romantic ambiance.

Additionally, Zhenhai Temple is one of the seven main temples in Donggang for worship. The every-three-years grand rite of welcoming the King and praying for peace at Donglong Temple is held in Zhenhai Park next to Zhenhai Temple, featuring the rituals of inviting the water and sending off the King by sailing the King’s boat (burning the King’s boat). After visiting the attractions, visitors can also head to the largest seafood retail market in Pingtung County—the Donggang Fishing Port Seafood Direct Sales Center—to taste a variety of freshly caught seafood and local snacks. The rooftop also features a seaside viewing platform, and in the evening, there is a colorful and dazzling light show performance.
