Spring also offers stunning red leaf scenery — in the nursery area around Jing Mountain Community in Shilin District, Japanese “maple” trees have dyed the entire valley crimson. The Taipei City Government’s Department of Urban Development, Bureau of Urban Development, notes that you don’t have to wait until autumn and travel all the way to Aowanda to admire the maples. You can now head to Shilin’s Jing Mountain Community to enjoy the first wave of spring maple beauty.

The maple-red variety in Jing Mountain Community is commonly known as the “Red Leaf Japanese Maple.” Local growers grafted branches and buds of Japanese maples onto the trunks of Taiwan’s native green maples. These maple leaves feature five to seven deep lobes. There are two periods of maple redness each year — in April and December — with the red foliage period in April being the longest. The new leaves of the Japanese maple are initially red, then gradually turn yellow and green, which is the opposite of the usual color transition seen in common green maples.

Huang Liyuan, Director of the Bureau of Urban Development, pointed out that located at No. 131 Jing Shan Road Lane and the end of Yongguang Road in Shilin District, Jing Mountain Community not only features popular DIY wedding photography spots familiar to many, but also numerous nurseries that supply the planting needs of the Taipei area. In recent years, the Bureau has invested in an agricultural environment improvement plan for Jing Mountain Community, adding walking trails and water-friendly recreational facilities. It has also completed the “Cherry Blossom Viewing Platform” and the “Camphor Tree Platform,” offering the public relaxing spaces to enjoy nature.

He Shengnan, Chief of Jing Mountain Li, mentioned that Jing Mountain Community also has many leisure farms and scenic restaurants, including the well-known maple-viewing nursery café “Taipei Aowanda.” Its cultivated varieties differ from green maples. The current red leaf scenery has attracted a large number of tourists for photo-taking. Especially after the Bureau improved the surrounding environment, the overall landscape of the community has become more harmonious, making it very suitable for families to come and admire the red maples, spending a wonderful time in the fragrant natural surroundings.
