The environment around hiking trails in Taipei City has gradually improved over the years, leading to a steady increase in the firefly population. The best time to view fireflies is roughly from late April to late May, between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM. The Department of Urban Development's Geotechnical Engineering Office of the Taipei City Government recommends five scenic and peaceful firefly-watching trails. As the spring breeze gently brushes through the forests of Taipei, fireflies twinkle like stars, dancing through the woods and painting with their lives — using life itself as color to create a breathtaking masterpiece. We welcome the public to stroll along these mountain trails, gaze at the flickering lights of fireflies, feel the vibrancy of life, and ignite the spark of hope within.

Huang Liyuan, head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, said that the “Cui Shan Trail” in Shilin District was originally an abandoned police shooting range, featuring rich and diverse natural landscapes. Thanks to vegetation restoration efforts by the office, the trail is now home to “Luciola kagiana” fireflies that flutter and play joyfully. Meanwhile, the “Dagou Stream Riverside Trail” in Neihu District benefits from the clean water quality of the nearby Dagou Stream, making it suitable for firefly habitat and reproduction. Along the stream, you can admire fluttering butterflies during the day and observe firefly activity at night.

Xia Xiantong, head of the Roads and Trails Section at the Geotechnical Engineering Office, said that the “Shuiche Liao Trail” in Beitou District is gentle and comfortable, and extends deep into the sea anemone fields. During the day, visitors can easily enjoy the embrace of pure white sea anemone seas, and at night, they can stroll among starlight and fireflies, watching them flit back and forth through the flowers. The flickering lights shine on the sea anemones, which respond with their pristine white smiles, revealing a rarely seen sight.

Wang Shanjuan from the registered nonprofit Chinese Nature Trail Association said that the “Tiger Mountain Nature Trail” in Xinyi District, located near Tiger Mountain Stream, features clear and pristine waters due to ecological engineering by the department, resulting in rich biodiversity. Fireflies are often seen dancing along the slopes beside the trail. In addition, the “Guihua Suspension Bridge Trail” in Nangang District, with its rich ecology and limited public access, also offers sightings of fireflies flying about during early summer nights.
