The Pingtung Black Marlin Cultural Tourism Festival kicks off with great fanfare today. This year’s edition introduces themed artistic lantern displays, exclusive specialty food banquets, and East Port mini-travel experiences, offering a rich and diverse program. Now in its 17th year, the Black Marlin Festival has transformed the traditional fishing village culture by integrating local cultural, industrial, and tourism resources to promote Pingtung as the hometown of black marlin. The public can head to the Greater Donggang area to join the festivities, enjoy fresh seafood, and have fun all summer long.

This year’s event features artistic lantern decorations under three major themes — “Abundance of Fish and Water,” “The Three Treasures of Donggang,” and “Happy Donggang” — with eight sets of lanterns. From now until June 30, the lights will be on display every evening from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM along the Dapai River dike next to Guangfu Road in Donggang Township, adding a luminous ambiance to the night. After enjoying fresh seafood, you can also take a stroll along the artfully lit lantern street.

And the specialty food banquet is not to be missed. On the evening of June 17 at 6:00 PM, the Pingtung County Government has organized the “Donggang and Little Liuqiu Specialty Food Banquet” in front of the temple square at Donglong Temple. Groups of 10 or more can enjoy a set meal for just NT$2,500 per table, sharing delicious dishes together. If you can’t gather 10 people, individuals can also sign up. The banquet includes authentic seafood such as black marlin sashimi, oilfish roe, and the famous meat dish | (text garbled) |, as well as other surprises and no additional fees. The menu is rich and varied.

The Donggang Gourmet Mini-Tour will take participants to visit the Overseas Chinese Market, sample street snacks, and listen to stories about Donggang’s culture and people. The tour is priced at NT$399 per person and open for registration. During May and June, shoppers who spend over NT$1,000 at stores in Linbian, Donggang, or Little Liuqiu can redeem a limited-edition black marlin sports towel upon presenting their receipts or invoices. Redemption locations include the Pingtung County Government Tourism and Communications Department, Dapeng Bay Visitor Center, Liuqiu Management Station and Visitor Center, and the Tourism Bureau’s Ask-Me-Station - Wei Yi Food Store (open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Only 2,000 towels are available, so hurry before they run out.

In addition to the series of activities at the Black Marlin Cultural Tourism Festival, there are various other nearby mini-trips. Visitors can head to Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area to enjoy sea breezes with coffee, admire the Pengwan Cross-Sea Bridge, experience water activities, and explore the wetland ecology of Donggang and Linbian. Alternatively, you can visit Nanzhou Sugar Refinery to try bingguan ice pops, dig in an earthen oven, and enjoy Japanese-style architecture and railway culture. In June, during the lotus blooming season, you can also visit [□] Ecological Park to admire the lotuses and pick up some famous [□] sesame oil as a souvenir. Or take a boat to Little Liuqiu to go snorkeling with sea turtles and explore the intertidal ecosystem, go stargazing on a night tour, and enjoy a different island vibe from Kenting.
