Ancient Iron Smelting Furnace

The ancient iron smelting furnace is located in Kuangshan Village, Wu'an City. It is an iron smelting furnace from the Song Dynasty. Currently, more than half of it is damaged, with a remaining height of 6 meters, a base diameter of 3 meters, and a thicker middle section. The furnace wall is 0.40–0.80 meters thick. The outer shell of the furnace was built with gravel stones, while the interior was constructed with sandy refractory clay. The inner walls of the furnace still bear remnants of charcoal used for iron smelting, bluestone pebbles (used as a catalyst), and un-melted ore blocks. Geological analysis and the condition of the furnace suggest that mining activities began here as early as the Song Dynasty, and iron smelting techniques had already reached a relatively advanced scientific level. The furnace’s architectural structure is rational, representing the crystallization of the technological knowledge and wisdom of ancient laborers. It has served as a reference for later iron smelting practices and holds significant historical and scientific value, providing tangible material for the study of ancient iron metallurgy in China. It is now a key cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.
