The Páihuái Site

The Páihuái Site is located to the north of Páihuái Village in Wu’an City, with the ? Chèyǐng Plateau to the south. The site sits at an elevation of 158 meters. Covering an area of approximately 30,000 square meters, it has a cultural layer about 0.5 meters thick. Major remains include ash pits and tombs. Artifacts consist of pottery, stone tools, bone implements, and shell artifacts. The pottery is mainly fine clay red pottery, with a small amount of sandy brown pottery. Vessel shapes include red-topped bowls, flat-bottomed cups, small-mouthed bottles, jars, basins, and cauldrons. Decorative patterns feature string patterns and rope patterns. Stone tools include stone shovels and stone grinding rods.

According to the cultural and chronological characteristics exhibited by the artifacts found at the site, the Páihuái Site is believed to date back to the first phase of the Hougang culture of the Neolithic Age. It is now a key cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.
