Pickled cabbage and pork hot pot originates from China’s northeast, where locals enjoy this type of hot pot all year round. Though not uncommon in Taiwan, authentic versions can be hard to find. This pickled cabbage and pork hot pot restaurant on Jilin Road in Taipei is run by three women from Jilin—a mother and her two daughters—who have made the business thrive for one simple reason: “authentic taste.”
Just a three-minute walk from Exit 1 of Guandu MRT Station, you’ll find Luguo Coffee’s Guandu flagship store. I’ve listed Amphawa Floating Night Market as one of the absolute must-see spots in Bangkok, and the most special thing is that there are shops lining both sides of the river!? No—when I came here in 2009, there were hardly any shops at all. How did so many pop up over the years? The river at Amphawa is full of floating boat vendors—you just order what you want to eat, and the vendors cook it right on their boats. We hadn’t even walked two steps out of our guesthouse when we were drawn to a charcoal-grilled prawn boat.
Apart from the retro building trend on Taiwan’s main island, the outlying islands have recently also embraced the renovation of old structures. On Green Island, there’s a brunch spot housed in a former deer farm, where the area that once separated male and female sika deer has been opened up. Guests sitting in this “deer-raising old house” smell none of the usual animal odors—instead, they’re greeted by a distinctive blend of earthy scent and food aromas.

I hadn’t known what to eat recently, but then heard from Sister Xiong that there’s a not-bad European-Mediterranean restaurant on Songren Road, just across from the Le Méridien Hotel. The best part? The owner is Turkish. So I picked a day to come try it out. To my surprise, the space here is really nice, the menu has quite a variety, and although it lacks a bit of uniqueness, the ingredients are solid and the flavors are good.
