The yam, one of New Taipei City’s “Healthy Trio,” is currently in its peak harvest season. To pass on the knowledge of yam cultivation and harvesting, the New Taipei City Government’s Agriculture Bureau invited elementary school students to visit yam farms. The children left the classroom for a yam farm adventure, learning about the growing conditions and experiencing the beauty of Shuangxi. The bureau also aims to help students understand from an early age the importance of natural ingredients for health.

The event featured farmer Lin Chao-gen, a four-time champion in yam evaluations, who shared yam cultivation tips. Students also harvested yams in the fields and experienced a day as little farmers. Beyond learning about the yam growth cycle and harvest, they understood the meaning behind the saying, “Every grain on the plate is the result of hard work.” After the labor-intensive effort of harvesting yams, the next stop took the students to Shuangxi Pinglin Leisure Eco-Farm, known for its exceptional natural environment. Here, they enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of Shuangxi. Savoring yam dishes—hailed as “food of the gods”—they felt the healthy and delicious flavors excite their taste buds. Paired with the stunning mountain-water scenery and the auditory delights of frog croaks and bird songs, this multi-sensory experience made the hustle and bustle of the city fade away.
Agriculture Bureau Director Liao Rong-ching stated that yams produced in New Taipei City are guaranteed for quality. Residents wishing to taste them can purchase them through local farming associations in various production areas. For more information, visit the New Taipei City Government Agriculture Bureau website. Everyone is encouraged to support the “New Taipei Healthy Trio” by buying the healthiest, safest, and freshest agricultural products directly from local farmers.
