Djemaa el-Fna is both a square and a marketplace, and the liveliest spot in Marrakech. It’s famous not just for its beautiful appearance, but primarily for its vibrant day-and-night life. During the day, the square is packed with acrobats, monkey handlers, snake charmers, and more, while in the afternoon it fills with strollers, magicians, dancers, musicians, and others.

By evening, it transforms into a sea of people, especially small vendors—those selling trinkets, fruits, but most of all, the mouthwatering food stalls that fill the square with the aroma of grilled delights. The food stands turn the square into an extraordinarily bustling open-air restaurant, serving a dazzling array of Moroccan cuisine year-round, rain or shine. Some of the most famous snacks at Djemaa el-Fna include a soup resembling hot and sour soup—but not spicy, rather slightly tangy—as well as fried pastries filled with syrup.
