Que’ergou Rock Carvings

Situated on the sandstone cliffs of the hills within Que’ergou, about 2 kilometers southwest of the Gongwusu Open-pit Mine and 4 kilometers southeast of the Haibowan Power Plant in Hainan District, Wuhai City. The carvings include human figures, animal figures, and others. Animal Figure 1 features two individual animals with their heads facing each other, and above their intersection is a large circle with a dot in the center of three concentric circles, displaying a very elegant form. The author believes this rock carving carries connotations of fertility worship, symbolizing the reproductive consciousness of animals. Animal Figure 2 is engraved on an isolated massive rock, depicting sheep, horses, dogs, and what appears to be traces of a vehicle rock carving. Although the engravings are shallow, they are very clearly visible. The animal and human figure carvings show several animal individuals alongside one human figure, whose legs are spread horizontally and bent upward from the knees, seemingly representing a male.
