Yutengping Broken Bridge

Yutengping Broken Bridge, also known as Longteng Broken Bridge, is located 80 meters upstream from the old Yutengping Railway Bridge on the former Mountain Line in Longteng Village, Sanyi Township, Miaoli County. It is a brick pier bridge constructed in Taiwan in 1907. This once-praised “masterpiece of Taiwanese railway architecture” – a brick arch railway bridge – survived the two major earthquakes that struck central Taiwan in 1935 and 1999, leaving behind broken spans and arches that bear deep historical and architectural significance.

After the major earthquakes, Yutengping Bridge could no longer be used safely, and due to sharp curves at both the north and south ends of the bridge, the Taichung Line Earthquake Reconstruction Office under the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office, Railway Bureau, decided against rebuilding the original bridge. Instead, they constructed the second-generation Yutengping Bridge on the west side of the original, which was completed in 1938 to replace the first-generation bridge. In 2000, the Council for Cultural Affairs designated Yutengping Broken Bridge as an earthquake memorial structure, and in 2003, Miaoli County Government listed it as a county-level historical monument under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. Today, it has become a renowned local tourist attraction.
