Jiuhua Mountain in Tongluo has long been a sacred Buddhist site. Along the rural roads stretching from here to nearby Jiulong Mountain, over 20 temples of various sizes are scattered, with worshippers coming up the mountain in an endless stream. Among them, Daxingshan Temple enjoys the most bustling incense offerings, with devotees spread across Taiwan.

The widely known Daxingshan Temple does not feature a grand Buddhist temple building or a majestic main hall. Instead, it has simple structures made of iron sheets and cement. The first floor enshrines the Three Jewels Buddha, while the second floor houses statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, the Three Saints of the West, an unnamed nun, relics, and other Buddhist images and objects. The temple garden is dotted with pavilions, stone benches, and old trees, and the path leading into the garden is lined with Buddhist verses. Not having a donation box is a distinctive feature of Daxingshan Temple.

In addition to Great Compassion Water, Daxingshan Temple also connects with the public through offerings such as peace noodles, vegetarian food, and Buddhist tea. Since the temple does not accept alms, devotees offer items such as noodles, rice noodles, and mushrooms, which the monks then cook into large pots of peace noodles. In the spacious shelter, devotees eat the noodles bowl by bowl, while the kitchen continuously supplies more, resembling the best representation of compassion in action and the convenient salvation of all beings.

The industrial road from Tongluo to Jiuhua Mountain is lined with camphor trees, offering a fresh and open scenery. Due to the continuous flow of worshippers, there are numerous vendors along the way selling a wide variety of local specialties, such as chrysanthemum tea, fried dough twists, peanut candy, preserved vegetables, honey, and bitter tea oil, creating a lively atmosphere. Among them, the red clay peanuts made from the red soil of Jiuhua Mountain are especially famous, and devotees often purchase offerings here before entering the temple.

Transportation guide: Take a Xinzhuang Bus from in front of Miaoli Railway Station to Tongluo, or take the Mountain Line of the Taiwan Railways, both of which stop at Tongluo Station. Then transfer to a taxi to get there.

Supply info: Peace noodles are usually available from 05:00 to 14:00, and from 05:00 to 18:00 on holidays; Buddhist tea and Great Compassion Water are available all day.
