Dawn Gate

Dawn Gate is located within the circular plaza and has now become a spiritual landmark for the people of Hsinchu City. It remains perpetually entwined with local discussions on politics, economy, culture, and transportation—both in the past and well into the future. It stands as the sole surviving witness to the establishment of the ancient Hsinchu City. True to its name, it stands proudly amidst the bustling streets, telling the history of the old city of Chianan and safeguarding every resident of Hsinchu. The East Gate of Hsinchu, also known as the Dawn Gate of Zhulian City, was built in the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty, which corresponds to the year 1733. At that time, Magistrate Xu Zhimin planted thorny bamboo around the Zhulian area, encircling a total of 410 zhang (approximately 1.37 kilometers), and established four gate towers at the east, west, south, and north. Moats were also dug to enhance the security within the city. The area around East Gate Street, adjacent to the East Gate, becomes particularly lively as night falls.
