The Simuku Trail

The Simuku Trail starts in the Xinguang Tribe of Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, travels through Simuku, and ends at Yuanyang Lake on the border of Yilan and Hsinchu. Although the straight-line distance is about 11 kilometers, the winding path makes the actual hiking distance around 50 kilometers. This trail was once an important pathway for the Atayal people residing in the mountainous regions behind Jianshi to enter and exit Datong, Yilan. Moreover, before the arrival of industrial roads, the residents of Simuku heavily relied on this trail for access and supplies.

For a long time, Simuku was the only tribal village in Taiwan without road access, giving it a remote and mysterious reputation—often referred to as the “Black Tribe.” The trail journey begins in Xinguang and heads eastward through Simuku, roughly following the contour lines as it winds into the forest. The discovery of the ancient tree grove has led to relatively well-maintained sections of this trail. As you approach Yuanyang Lake, the humidity becomes increasingly noticeable, with thick layers of moss and lichen covering all trees and rocks. The atmosphere feels like a waterlogged sponge, ready to release moisture at any moment. Yuanyang Lake itself is perpetually shrouded in heavy mist and clouds.

Transportation Guide

1. There is no direct bus to Xinguang. Travelers can arrange a chartered vehicle from Zhudong to reach the mountain.

2. From Yilan Railway Station, take the Yixing Bus bound for Baling to Qilan Work Station, then walk 17 kilometers along Forest Road No. 100 to reach the entrance of Yuanyang Lake.
