Constructed in the 4th year of the Daoguang era (1824), the Yang Family Memorial Archway of Chastity and Filial Piety is the oldest surviving archway in Hsinchu City and set the precedent for the four-pillar, three-bay, three-story style of archways in Taiwan. Yang was one of the few chaste women without noble lineage, which is why only two of the pillars feature inscriptions by famous individuals—both identical on either side, a very uncommon case among archways. The stone-paved street where the Yang Family Archway stands, once the mandatory route into the city, now retains only about 20 meters of its original stone path at the base of the archway, also designated as a protected historical site.
