Shing Mun Country Park

Shing Mun Country Park was established on June 24, 1977, as one of Hong Kong's first country parks, covering an area of 14 square kilometres. The park stretches from Lead Mine Pass in the north to Shing Mun Reservoir Road in the south; from Tai Mo Shan in the west to Grass Hill and Needle Hill in the east. Within the park lies Shing Mun Reservoir, nestled at the southeastern foot of Tai Mo Shan, surrounded by mountains and boasting beautiful scenery — it has long been a popular spot for outings. The Shing Mun Arboretum and Tai Mo Shan Montane Scrubland Special Areas are also located within Shing Mun Country Park.

The Shing Mun Country Park Visitor Centre is located next to the minibus terminus. It features exhibitions introducing the history and relocation of the Hakka villagers in the Pineapple Dam area, the construction of the reservoir, and information about early mining industries, along with exhibits such as woodland habitat models. The park includes a specimen tree woodland where visitors can view various plant species. Near the main dam of the reservoir, there are barbecue facilities, as well as toilets, a tea kiosk, rain shelters, a ranger station, jogging trails, the Pineapple Dam Nature Trail, and viewpoints. There is also a campsite near Lead Mine Pass.

The specimen tree woodland in Shing Mun Country Park covers an area of 4 hectares and was originally terraced fields abandoned after the relocation of the Shing Mun Valley village during the reservoir’s construction. Starting in the early 1970s, a variety of representative trees were planted here. By the year 2000, over 270 species of plants native to Hong Kong or South China had been planted, totaling more than 7,000 trees.
