Kap Shui Mun Bridge

Kap Shui Mun Bridge is a major bridge in Hong Kong, forming part of Route 8 – the Lantau Link, which spans the Kap Shui Mun channel and connects Ma Wan with the Tsing Yi Peninsula on Lantau Island. The main span of the bridge is 430 metres long, with a total length including approach roads of 820 metres, and a speed limit of 80 km/h. Kap Shui Mun Bridge and the Ma Wan Viaduct are two key bridges that provide direct access to Hong Kong International Airport on Chek Lap Kok.

Construction of Kap Shui Mun Bridge began on December 21, 1992. It features a dual-deck design, with the contract valued at HK$1.643 billion. The upper, open-air deck consists of a three-lane dual-carriageway expressway, while the covered lower deck accommodates the tracks for the Airport Express and Tung Chung lines of the MTR, as well as two single-lane roadways for emergency use (such as during typhoons). The bridge stands 47 metres above sea level, with its towers reaching 150 metres in height. In terms of weight, the structure includes 4,800 tonnes of structural steel and 73,000 cubic metres of concrete.

Kap Shui Mun Bridge was once the longest combined road-and-rail cable-stayed bridge in the world. This record was surpassed in 2000 by the Øresund Bridge, which spans Denmark and Sweden and has a main span of 490 metres.
