The temple was established in 1935. Its first abbot was Venerable Rong Yan. In 1939, Venerable Mao Rui succeeded as abbot and served until his passing in 1976. Venerable Mao Rui frequently invited eminent monastics to give Dharma talks at the temple, and Nan Tianzhu Temple gradually became one of Hong Kong’s well-known temples.
