The Niuwangmiao Theater Stage is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Shanxi has a long history of opera, especially in southern Shanxi, which is one of the birthplaces of Chinese opera. As a result, Shanxi is often called the "cradle of Chinese opera." The province boasts 54 local opera genres, the highest number in the country. Consequently, as an important symbol of the development of Chinese opera, there are also many theater stages. According to statistics, to this day Shanxi preserves 2,886 ancient theater stages, distributed across nearly all regions of the province, including six of the oldest Yuan Dynasty stages.

Located in Niuwangmiao within Weicun, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Linfen City, the stage was built in 1293 and is the oldest surviving theater stage in China. It adopts the form of a music tower—wooden pavilion-style stage with a square floor plan, walls on three sides, and the front serving as the stage opening, without distinction between front and back performance areas. The architectural structure of the stage follows a "well" frame design, topped with either a single-eave hip-and-gable roof or a cruciform hip-and-gable roof. It is a valuable physical relic for studying the history of Chinese theatrical development.
