Gaodui Site (First Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Sites)

Period: Neolithic Age

Location: Approximately 150 meters northwest of Gaodui Village, Liucun Town, Yaodu District

The site is located east of the Fen River and west of the Lüliang Mountains, lying on the piedmont slope at the eastern foot of the Lüliang Mountains. It features a terrain that slopes from west to east, with numerous exposed strata. It was discovered during surveys in the 1950s. The total area covers 70,000 square meters. In the spring of 2001, large-scale excavations were carried out in coordination with the construction of the Dayun Expressway, uncovering an area of approximately 4,000 square meters. Remains primarily associated with the Miaodigou Culture and the Taosi Culture of the Neolithic Age were discovered, including exquisitely built houses, pottery kilns, and relatively large kiln pits. These findings indicate that this area served as a central zone and significant settlement during those two periods, making it highly meaningful for understanding the prosperity and underlying reasons of the prehistoric period in the Linfen Basin.

The cultural characteristics of the Gaodui Site are reflected in its reddish-brown cylindrical jars, which bear similarities to those from the second phase of the Miaodigou Culture. The cauldron stoves and cauldron-shaped vessels exhibit early characteristics of the Taosi Culture.
